Explorations in Technology Modules will provide an opportunity for learners to take an active role in their education by allowing them to “teach themselves.” The technology teacher will be a guide or facilitator rather that a lecturer. Learners’ reading, writing, problem-solving, science and math skills will be used in "real-world" applications as they complete this course. |

What is Technology? Technology, simply defined, is the practical application of human knowledge to improve the way that humankind lives, providing for its wants and needs. A Technology Education course such as this one, will help learners to become technologically literate, preparing them to function as productive, knowledgeable citizens in our technological world. Technology is all around us, and this course will help learners to understand and use it. Technology involves the practical application and use of reading, writing, problem-solving, science and math. These are skills that students are learning in their other classes. Learners will be required to read and write as a part of each module, and will see how math and science knowledge can be applied to everyday life. |

What are Modules? Modules, or learning areas, have been developed to allow learners to interact with computers, electronics, robots and other “high-tech” equipment. Each module workstation, representing an area of technology, is a defined space equipped with all of the necessary curriculum, tools, equipment, materials, and supplies required to complete the learning activities. Learners spend the majority of their class time in these modules working with a partner, completing “hands-on” activities. |
||
What “High-Tech Equipment do learners use? Each module in the technology lab area has been furnished with high-tech, hands-on equipment. Some of the equipment and materials that learners have the opportunity to work with are computers, a robotic arm, an electronics trainer, a CNC mill, a plotter, a digital camera and other trainers, tools and machines. It is each learner’s responsibility to help keep everything in good repair by handling all supplies, materials, and equipment with care. The equipment is there to help all students learn. The
general goal of the Level I Technology Education Course is to initiate
an AWARENESS
in the learner of technology and its role in modern society. Outcomes for Explorations in Technology Modules The learner will: 1. Define “Technology.” 2. Describe the impact of technology on his/her life. 3. Develop an awareness of technology related careers. 4. Access and apply information while solving practical problems. 5. Contribute to and take from a team of fellow learners while developing teamwork skills and attitudes. 6. Develop computer literacy while using computers and peripherals as tools to solve practical problems. 7. Touch, feel, see, smell and apply the “basics” including math, science and communication skills. |
