Larry
Brownlee has been the band director for Sterling USD #376 since
1985.
He is in charge of the entire band program in grades 6-12. He is
a 1980 graduate of Sterling College and a 1976 graduate of Sterling
High
School where he was active in the SHS Band program under the direction
of Mr. Brian Thielen. He received his Masters Degree in Music
Education
from Wichita State University. Mr. Brownlee previously taught
band
at Chase and Eureka, Kansas.
While under Mr.
Brownlee's direction, the
Sterling High School band
has been selected to perform at the Kansas Music Educators' State
Convention
a total of seven times and the Jr. High band and SHS jazz band have each been selected
once.
The band has also won the Worlds of Fun Band Festival sweepstake
trophy,
has been selected as a GRAMMY Signature School for excellence in music
education, and was selected to represent the state of Kansas at the
Musical
Salute to George Washington in Washington, D.C. in June of 1999.
In addition to directing
the band, Mr.
Brownlee is also the SHS National
Honor Society sponsor, SHS girls'
basketball coach and SHS/SJH assistant cross country coach.
The basketball team finished second in the State Tournament in 1999 and
Mr. Brownlee was selected to coach an All-Star team in Hawaii during
the
summer of 2001. He is also currently the choir director at the
Sterling
United Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Brownlee's wife, Amy,
is the Sterling School District Media Specialist and District
Librarian.
They have three children, Bryson (5), Macy (4)and Isabel (2).
