COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a one year course for students who wish to further explore acting through improvisation and scene work. The acting technique of Robert Cohen is introduced and applied. Students will also write, produce, and edit a film after learning the language of film and beginning filming techniques. Additional units in past years have included: a survey of classic American films, a playwriting unit, and in improvisation workshop. In addition, each class member will participate in one of the three SHS productions during the year.
OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES:
The learner will demonstrate knowledge of the acting techniques introduced in Robert Cohen's Acting Power.
The learner will demonstrate proficiency of regional dialects used for scene work.
The learner will be able to employ various procedures taught for scene work analysis and performance.
The learner will demonstrate the ability to correctly audition in a hypothetical audition setting.
The learner will be exposed to various styles and types of plays used for scene exploration.
The learner will demonstrate proficiency in moving from the improvisational text to the written one.
The learner will demonstrate an understanding of basic filming language and techniques as well as show proficiency in
editing a short film.
The student will be exposed to acting within the context of an actual performance and demonstrate an understanding of the theater process from auditions through rehearsal and performance.
COURSE ATTENDANCE AND TARDY POLICY:
The instructor will follow the procedure outlined in the student handbook for tardies in excess of three per semester.
Students are to inform the instructor of any impending excused absence whether it be for school or personal activities (field trips, athletic events, forensics/debate meets, music events, other club activities ). Failure to do so will result in a 10% penalty on any work done that day.
Students who are absent due to illness have two days to make-up work for every day absent.
The school policy for cell phones will also be followed.
EVALUATION AND GRADING:
Grading Scale:
100% -90%=A
90%-80%=B
80%-70%=C
70%-60%=D
59% or below= F
Late papers, projects, or daily assignments will result in the loss of one letter grade per day late.
Students are expected to bring their needed materials. A return trip to a locker will result in a tardy violation. The student is expected to have his/her own writing utensils, books, and paper.
Food, drink (except water), and ipods are not allowed during the class time.
