Course Description:

This is a year-long, 1 credit class that will explore, in depth, American Sign Language and issues related to and affecting Deaf people in America.  Students will also improve their signing skills by deepening vocabulary and experiences in syntax and usage.  This is worth a foreign language credit.

 

Course Objectives:

*  By the end of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate fluent and conversational vocabulary usage with approximately 1,000 words and 80% accuracy.

* By the end of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of Deaf culture, history, education, ASL structure and Deaf services to the teacher’s satisfaction.

 

Materials:

* Textbook: The Joy of Signing (and accompanying CD)

* Paper

* Pencil or pen

* Notebook for keeping tests, handouts and assignments

* One audio and one video tape, to be brought to me by next class period!!!

 

Class Format and Activities:

Students will be expected to do research in the areas of Deaf education, history, culture, and services, and prepare formal and informal written and spoken presentations.  Lectures, field trips, games, guest speakers, book reviews,  movie reactions, expressive and receptive tests, as well as simulation activities, practice interpreting situations, and teaching opportunities are possible activities that will make up the rest of the learning experience.
