Dan Whisler has been the Life Science teacher at Sterling High School since 1985, teaching Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Environmental Science. He is a 1980 graduate of Salina Central High School where he was an honor student and four-year participant in both cross country and track. Mr. Whisler earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Bethany College and his Masters from Emporia State University.
Mr. Whisler is the leader of the SHS Wind for Schools program and also serves as the head cross country coach and as an assistant track coach. Coach Whisler has guided the “Runnin’ Bears” cross country program for the past 20 years, including three consecutive Class 2A State Championships for the boys team in 2005-2007. He was honored as the Kansas Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2008. Coach Whisler has served as a cross country coach for Down Under Sports since 2007, leading teams of high school runners in international competition in Australia each summer.
Mr. Whisler’s wife, Kelley, is also a high school science teacher (Buhler High School); in fact, the two of them met at a cancelled teacher’s workshop…they were the only ones who weren’t notified of the cancellation. Must have been meant to be! They have four children, Mike (18), Matt (14), Grace (7), and Layne (4). The whole family loves outdoor activities that they can do together like hunting, fishing, camping & hiking.
