Wellness Center

The over 5,000 sq. ft., 45' x 125' block structure with brick facade, will devote 1,000 sq. ft. to cardiovascular and general weight equipment. There will be a plyometric track for walking, running, and aerobics. Another 2,500 sq. ft. is solely for free weights, Olympic lifting, and Hammer Strength equipment.

Sterling Recreation Commission is responsible for monthly payments to USD 376 for cost of facility construction. This money is allocated from a special 1 mil increase in the recreation commission's mil levy. USD 376 has provided land for construction and will be responsible for utilities and maintenance of the facility. They will also provide limited weight room equipment. Additional weight room equipment and cardiovascular equipment will be purchased through grant money and gifts.

USD 376 has 5 multi-purpose squat racks with benches and bars, assorted bars and plates, 2 lat pull machines, hip sled, abdominal board, glute-ham machine, and leg extension/flexor machine. This equipment will provide for most of the needs of the district's athletic programs. With the recent closure of the Brick House Gym in Hutchinson, the opportunity to purchase quality used equipment arose at a price far less than new. Many patrons of our community are familiar with the quality of the equipment and provided important insight for buying the equipment.

USD 376 and the SRC will jointly operate the facility. USD 376 will use the weight room and plyometric portions of the facility at various times during the school day and on a limited basis during athletic practices. The SRC will operate the cardiovascular and machine portions of the weight room during all operation hours. The SRC will operate the entire facility during hours when not in use by USD 376.

The SRC will use money from membership fees to offset the cost of staffing the facility. Consideration will be given to provide staffing to meet as many of the demands of the membership as possible. Usage rates of the membership will dictate the hours and quantity of staffing. The SRC will make every effort to provide friendly and knowledgeable staff that can help members meet their needs. One of the most important considerations in staffing will be to provide staff that can work with healthcare providers to tailor programs that can meet the needs of patients that are referred to the fitness center.

The project is a joint effort between USD 376, the Sterling Recreation Commission, and the Sterling community. Construction and operation of a facility of this magnitude could not have been possible by any of these entities alone. It will require some give and take by all parties to make this joint effort a win-win for all. This is a very bold concept and one that has taken much effort and forethought. Not all parties will have everything they want in this facility but all stand to gain much more than they have ever had before. Every effort has been made and will continue to be made to make this a facility that we can all be proud of.

Fund-raising from this point forward will be critical to ensuring that we have the kind of equipment that can be useful for both the USD 376 students as well as the community. Every effort will be made to develop a rate structure for membership fees that will make access to this facility affordable for any member of our community that desires to improve their health. In this day of rising health care costs, every dollar spent on this facility and its operation can be worth thousands of dollars saved in health care costs in our community.

People from every corner of our community have been involved in planning this facility and its operation. Healthcare providers, district patrons, elderly taxpayers, health enthusiasts, and educators from our community have all been involved in the planning and will continue to have input in future operations. It is the hope of the planning committee that our community will back this project with gifts of time or money and active membership. Many have already provided financial support, discounted services, and countless hours of time and for that we are grateful.
