Happy Friday, Black Bears! It's been a great week at SJSHS and we're excited about the week ahead.

Best Things I Saw This Week

BTISTW has moved to the Live Feed on our website. This week's best things include FFA Land Judging, JH Cross Country, some artwork on display, and a very intriguing guest speaker.

These posts are also available on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Where's My Calendar?

It moved. Sort of. Our new app and website are now the hosts of all of our events. You can click on the Event button to see all of our events or you can filter them by school or event category.

Can I see a Monthly Calendar?

Sure. To access the monthly calendar from the website, go to Menu, then scroll down to the bottom of the Resources section and click on Monthly Calendar. This should prompt you to add the Sterling USD#376 calendar. If you use Google Calendars, you can then search for events by title (i.e., search VB for all Volleyball entries).

Where's my Lunch Menu for the Month?

Under the Dining button, you'll only see the current week, next week, and all (through the end of the next month). If you want to see the entire month so you can put it on the fridge, click Menu, then click on Food Services under the District Information section. The District Monthly Menus is on the left side, second from the top.

Extended School & Eligibility

Every day, from 3:25 until 5:00, students have the opportunity to receive extra help in Extended School. No signup is required, but students are asked to arrive by 3:30 or communicate with Mrs. Prather (Monday and Tuesday) or Mrs. Schroeder (Wednesday through Friday) of their intention to attend and arrive later. Extended School is held in Mrs. Linda Calderwood's classroom on the south end of the Junior High hallway.

For students who appear on our ineligible list, the following flowchart will determine the level of help we assign students to encourage academic progress toward graduation and preparation for study and work.

The first week a student is failing will result in ineligibility for activities and notification from a coach or sponsor, or, for students who are not currently involved in an activity, an administrator. Students will be encouraged to address the failing grade with the classroom teacher and utilize Extended School as needed.

If the student has a failing grade for a second consecutive week, extended school is assigned in addition to the ineligibility and parents are notified via email. A third consecutive week will result in the addition of a parent meeting to discuss how to best meet the academic needs of the student. After the meeting, an email will continue to serve as notification to parents of the continued academic struggle.

Students who are assigned Extended School for academic reasons are required to attend. Lack of attendance without administrative excusal will result in disciplinary action, including referral for truancy and possible suspension from school.

Social Media Challenge, Week Two (#WeAreSterling)

Over the course of the next two weeks leading up to, and including, Homecoming Week (Oct 7-11), I'm challenging all of you who frequent social media to post pictures of what makes Sterling Junior/Senior High School AWESOME! Whether your primary medium is Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, post your best picture representing the best of SJSHS and tag it with #WeAreSterling. Over the course of the next three weeks, we'll award a few lucky participants with discount coupons and some freebies for your efforts. At the Homecoming Pep Rally, we'll announce our winners and the prizes will be sweet!

And yes, this activity and contest is open to ALL Black Bears, regardless of age or shoe size. Come on and help us celebrate everything Black & White! If we get enough participation, perhaps #WeAreSterling can get on a trending list.
