Dear SGS Parents, Today at 2:15 pm we are having our "opening ceremonies" as part of our own SGS Winter Olympics. The opening ceremony is not open to the public but you can view it live on our own 3BN Network today. Each classroom has selected a country that is competing in the Winter Olympics and students are learning about those countries in their classrooms. Students will also be participating in our own SGS Winter Olympic events in their PE classes with events such as bobsledding, curling, speed skating, the luge, and ski jumping. (Special thanks to our PE teacher, Ms. Susan Brown.) It should be a fun and educational time for our students! Our opening ceremony will involve each class presenting their country and will be recognized as SGS Olympians. You can view it at www.shsblackbears.com. Our SGS Winter Olympics will conclude with closing ceremonies on February 25th. Be sure to cheer on our SGS Olympians!

Today we added 2 new positive cases to SJSHS, bringing the total number of active cases to 15. The number of active cases at SGS is still 2. We actually had a total of 8 positive tests today. In these alerts, we only report the number of new positives that have close contacts at school. Of the 8 positive cases, 3 were in the test to stay protocol, 2 were testing to return on day 6 of being positive, and the other three were tests requested by families because they were symptomatic household contacts. Our testing program was able to keep 5 positive students that would have been in class out until it is safe for them to return. At the same time, all healthy close contacts (other than household contacts) can continue to attend school and fully participate in activities if they choose to participate in TTS. We believe our plan is working as intended, and keeping the spread slow enough that large groups of students and staff are not missing school. We know it is a strain on families to bring kids in early for testing, and it is stressful to wait for results. It has been a challenging time for everyone on our staff as we deal with the stress and strain of working with remote and absent students and try to cover for missing staff members. Everyone in the district is dedicated to keeping school open, and as good and normal as possible in this challenging time. The “experts” say the surge should drop off quickly, so hopefully we will be through this tough time soon and the spring will be as uneventful as this fall was.

We have had 5 SJSHS students test positive today. There are now a total of 13 actively positive students at SJSHS. An additional SGS student tested positive for a total of 2 active. Please monitor your students extra closely for cold and flu like symptoms and keep them home if they are ill.

There was a mistake in the updates to our reopening plan that were posted on Monday. RCHD let us know that we are not able to have household contacts participate in the Test To Stay protocol. Household contacts must stay home from school for 5 days from the last exposure, then test and wear a mask for 5 additional days. Sorry for any confusion.

Please pardon our tardiness with today's Friday Focus. We wanted to have the most up-to-date information in our 2-week schedule, even though it may change. http://sterlingusd376ks.apptegy.us/article/628604?org=usd-376
