Living in Sterling has many benefits, but one that sometimes gets overlooked is the amazing service we receive from the City of Sterling and our city employees. In the past week there have been two times that school or school events may have been canceled if not for our city employees going above and beyond.. After the big snowstorm last Monday the city crews spent hours working on the roads and parking areas around both schools. They cleared snow away so that the entire area around the buildings is clear and dry to this day. If not for their hard work before the cold set in, our students and staff would be slipping and sliding over rough, frozen streets and parking areas for the rest of this week. The public works crew saved the day again yesterday. At 3:00 a waterline in front of the junior high entrance broke and was bubbling up through the asphalt. We started making contingency plans to modify the Sterling Invitational Tournament if water to the building could not be restored. Amazingly, working in below zero temperatures with water and ice all around, they were able to repair the leak and have our water back on by 5:30.
As you drive the clear roads around our schools, especially as you pass the barricades around the hole on 5th street, say a prayer of thanks for the skilled, dedicated people that keep our power on, our water flowing, and our city running smoothly.

Sterling Public Schools is looking for a food service director that will be dedicated to serving great meals to our students, and taking great care of our staff.
Experience as a food service employee is required. Experience managing staff and planning and budging meals for 400 people a day is strongly preferred.
The contract is for 190 days, so there is an extended summer break, and only limited responsibilities when school is out.
The start date can be somewhat flexible. Our retiring director can be available to help get the new director familiar with our current processes.
Salary starts at $31,000 and will be based on qualifications and experience.

In an attempt to beat more weather coming in Thursday night, we are adjusting the schedule for tomorrow's junior high basketball games in Moundridge. The B boys and A girls will play at 4:00. The B girls and A boys will be at 5:00. All games will be at the high school.

Notice is hereby given pursuant to the provisions of K.S.A. 25-2022 of a vacancy in the membership of the Board of Education of Unified School District No. 376, Rice County, Kansas, and that such vacancy will be filled by appointment of the Board of Education not sooner than fifteen (15) days following publication of this notice. The appointed member will serve until the next general school board election. Such a vacancy exists by reason of the resignation of Ted Carder.
Any qualified resident of USD 376 may submit an application for appointment to the board of education that includes a resume, a written statement of why you would like to serve on the board of education, and what makes you the best candidate. All applications must be delivered to the district office by 4:30 PM on February 7th. Applications will be considered by the board at the February board meeting scheduled for February 12th, 7:00 PM in the SJSHS library at which time they will decide if they would like to conduct interviews at a later date, appoint a candidate based on the applications, or table the decision for a later meeting. Sterling city crews and our custodians did a great job of getting our properties ready, but the county roads are still treacherous, with the graders themselves getting stuck several times. Considering that, the risk of refreezing, and the fact that tomorrow was already scheduled to be a half day, we have decided to close school tomorrow, Wednesday, January 10th. Stay warm and safe tomorrow, and we'll see you all on Thursday.
The basketball games for tonight at Central Plains have been postponed. We will look for a make up date. Please stay warm and safe today!
Sterling Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9th, due to expected ice, snow and wind. We will work with Central Plains to determine if travel conditions in the evening will allow for the scheduled high school basketball games.
Tonight's Board of Education Meeting has been moved up from 7:00PM to 6:00PM in an effort to get everyone home before the worst of the bad weather arrives in Sterling.
The junior high basketball games scheduled in Remington for tonight have been postponed. The reschedule date is next Monday, January 15th.
Tonight's games against Bennington have been postponed. A tentative make up date is scheduled for Friday, January 26th. For now, teams will still have practices this evening.
