St. John will now have concessions tonight. They found a group to run it last minute.

There will be no concessions at tonight's junior high basketball games in St. John. Please plan accordingly.

Sterling Stuff You Should Know: If you didn’t do debate, you may not know that all high school students in the entire country debate the same topic for an entire year. This year’s topic is fiscal redistribution. Tournaments start in September and take place every week until mid-January except for holiday breaks. Strong debaters have a head start on careers requiring logic and persuasion–which is EVERY CAREER, EVER. #WeAreSterling

What a time to be at SHS! The fall musical (Friday and Saturday, 730pm) is too good to miss. Torey Wilson and his experienced cast and crew create magic on the stage! Also, we are getting ready for basketball season. Excitement is through the roof for the boys, who have made it at least to the sub-state championship the past 4 years! And get ready for a new era for the girls with SHS and Sterling College legend, head coach Kylah Hayes! All this plus art, music, FBLA, debate, scholar's bowl, FFA . . . and on and on and on. #WeAreSterling

On Tuesday morning, November 7th, there will be fall picture retakes. Any student that was absent may have their picture retaken. If students return their first picture packet they may also have retakes. For questions, please contact the SGS office.

It's Musical Week at SJSHS! This year's performance features A Year with Frog and Toad. The curtain goes up at 7:30 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings in the Betsy Dutton Theatre. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. #WeAreSterling

Preparing the next generation of Black Bears in kindergarten PE!

(SHS Applied English uses data, words, and visuals to communicate about student achievement.)
With several performing arts events scheduled next week, our researchers looked into links between arts education, higher attendance, and improved student engagement. Turns out, the link is strong and Sterling's students are powerful evidence.
According to a study conducted by the Boston Globe in 2021, “...Public school students who were enrolled in arts education programs had greater school engagement and higher daily attendance, and their parents were more likely to be active in school activities.”
SHS junior Mason Lockhart had more to say: “The arts keep me coming back to school. Whether it be a debate tournament the following day, or musical rehearsal, my participation in the arts definitely helps my attendance.”
According to KSDE.org report card data, daily school attendance at SHS surpasses all other Rice County schools.
So as you plan an evening with Frog and Toad at the Betsy Dutton Theater next week, give yourself credit: your evening of delightful entertainment also supports scholarship and daily attendance. The research confirms it. #WeAreSterling

Admission prices for tomorrow night's football game in Conway Springs will be $8 for adults and $6 for K-12 students. Since this is a KSHSAA post season event, only KSHSAA passes will be accepted.

The SGS parade route will be shortened due to the weather. Students will leave SGS today at 1:45 and head to Sterling Lake but will parade around "Turtle Island" in front of the bathhouse. Students will not be walking around the entire lake. The parade is open to the public.

Here is the SJSHS Week in Review for Week 10. #WeAreSterling
